Open Cupboard Food Pantry

The Open Cupboard food pantry is trying to meet some of the needs of the growing number of Hunterdon County residents who have hit some difficult times. The clients at the pantry are people like you and me. Many of them have lost jobs, or have limited or no pensions. Many of the clients are elderly people on fixed incomes. Some of the people getting help are physically handicapped, or mentally or emotionally challenged. There are many single parents trying to do the best they can to feed their families. Some of the patrons take the Link or ride a bicycle to pick up their groceries. Some are getting assistance short term, and others have needed this assistance for many years.

Last month our church gave under 100 pounds of food to the Open Cupboard Food Pantry. To put things into perspective each family of 4 collects about 160 pounds of food per month at the pantry. In December the pantry fed 550 people, the most it has ever serviced before. The pantry buys milk, eggs, cheese, meats and bakery items. The fresh vegetables and fruits are also either donated or purchased. The non-perishables are the donations given by schools, scouts, churches and other organizations.

Think about how often you can go out and buy and meal or get a cup of coffee. These families do not have those luxuries. Can you get a few items for a needy family along with your shopping? Please think about this the next time you go shopping and if you have children let them choose something they think a child their age would enjoy eating. It’s a great lesson for them, also.

As Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you. So you must love one another.” This is just one way of showing that love

The 7th and 8th grade classes have helped the needy by collecting 104 items for the Open Cupboard Food Pantry. With the inspiration of Bob Tombs, their teacher, the teens did a great job for the community.

	Thank you one and all!

	Food Pantry Update

The Pantry had 555 clients they serviced last month. This is the highest enrollment in this program ever. It is a sign of the times.

Thank you for all those who have donated food or money to the pantry. We had 226 pounds of food donations from CPC for the last 2 weeks. Super job! Keep those groceries or donations coming in. If you have any questions or need any information please contact me.

Nominating Ministry Update

The Nominating Ministry is presently considering CPC members for the positions of Deacon and Elder and we are looking for your input!

If you are interested or know someone that might be interested – please prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve.

To better understand the role of Deacons and Elders, we have provided the following descriptions.

Deacons represent the heart of Christian service to those in need. They offer their services to others by establishing contact and building relationships with the members of the church. They are resourceful people who cohesively hold a bank of talents as they meet the changing needs of the congregation.

Elders include a variety of people that reflect the diversity of the congregation who govern the church through active participation in spiritual, educational and practical activities of CPC. Elder’s chair or co-chair one of CPC’s ministries, and by thoughtful prayer, open discussions and focused study, discern the plans that God has for our church.

If you would like more information or have any questions regarding these positions, please contact Liz Scannell at escann23@yahoo.com.

Over the years, the CPC High School Mission Trip to New York and individual CPC families have served with the Relief Bus. The Relief Bus outreach consists of two former school buses customized into mobile resource centers that go out to the poor and homeless in NYC and Newark. Volunteers serve food, pass out clothing and befriend the poor and homeless in these cities. Relief Bus staff also provide social services referrals and spiritual support.

Now that winter has finally arrived, there is a greater need for warm, men’s clothing at all outreach locations. As a result, the CPC Mission Ministry will be collecting new socks (simple tube socks in various sizes are great) and new or gently-used winter coats. These items can be dropped off through Sunday, February 5 in the boxes located at the back of the sanctuary. A group of CPC volunteers will distribute the clothing when they volunteer with the Relief Bus in Newark on Friday, February 10

Please contact Dave Kelly or any member of the Mission Ministry team if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting the Relief Bus!

In this very readable book, veteran radical Mike Slaughter has penned a rather punchy reflection on the real meaning of and significance of Christmas-the wonder of Jesus and joy that comes through adherence to him. Christmas Is Not Your Birth invites us to once again surrender ourselves to God’s intentions in and through Jesus. In five short, engaging chapters, Pastor Mike Slaughter inspires readers to approach Christmas differently, and be transformed in the process. If you are interested in participating in this 6-session Advent cell group please email Adrienne Hodulik directorce4cpc@gmail.com today!

Get together with CPC friends and family and meet new folks in small group discussions. Group meeting days and times are open. We are looking for interested folks to determine group meeting schedules.
